Can anyone help me, My dad is due to retire in jan 2009 and the family would like to suprise him and book a nice meal, there will be a large group travelling from outside the area to where he lives in Hailsham East Susex and we do not know the area as we come to visit but have never eaten out in the area, so we need advice on where we can book (nothing formal, just good decent food) even if its a good family pub we are open to suggestions, please can you help??

Hi there annie,
I live near Rye,and have a hospital appointment each Wednesday in Battle.
After this we repair to Scolfe's in Boreham Street.
Here is their website:~
http://www.scolfes.co.uk/
They open(as you will see) in the day only(not evening).
You could call them a Tea Shop/Restaurant.They do good home cooked food(Kitty Bond is the cook)Front of house is her Husband Jim,and his staff Kasha and Karen.I cannot rate the welcome, atmosphere and food too highly. It's not expensive,an average main course is £7.96(inc veg) and you can have everything from a Scone and Tea to 3 course meal;and they are licencensed.Jim and his staff will go out of their way to please you.
If you are going to be a big part do book early as they get busy(especially at weekends).
If you go say Gordon & Bil (regulars)l sent you.
Have a look at the website and see what you think, you won't be sorry you did.

I had a brilliant weekend at the Powder Mills Hotel at Battle a few years ago...

http://www.powdermillshotel.com/

Great food, wonderful pampering and awesome bluebells in the lovely grounds. The bar staff were fabby and knew their stuff and I managed to wangle a visit into the kitchen to chat to the chef ! They had no problems accommodating an *awkward* veggie visitor (lol - me) and nothing was too much trouble for them.
