fizzy drinks and carbon dioxide

when i was about 10 and i had finished a fizzy drink i used to inhale the left over carbon dioxide or whatever in the empty bottle and it used to make me feel really weird. Sorry its so random i know!

Just wondering why, how, what actually happens etc. i dont understand it!
