In all honesty I did.  I was never afraid of the creatures or any of his foes but the music along with the end titles where it looked like you were travelling through a tunnel of smoke rings used to terrify me!

The new series doesn't appear to be as bad as the critics have made out but Jon Pertwee is still the best Doctor ever, IMHO.

In the 1960's our sofa was against the wall too, but I did hide behind ( and between ) the arm-chairs that were at a right-angle to the TV.

back in the 70's i used to hide behind the telly(it wasnt against the wall !)

My brother did and I thought it was great as you could even forget he was there. Kid brothers! He was 4 years younger than me and we started watching Doctor Who from the very beginning with William Hartnell.

Yes, I hid behind the sofa too! :)  Tom Baker was 'my' Doctor! :)  Again, like Philtaz, the tunnel end credit sequence used to scare me too! lol

My mum used to move the sofa out a little for my brother & I to hide behind. The sofa was wooden with loose cushions on it that were held by big elastic straps at the back. This meant that we could hide behind & peek through at the same time!

Thanks for all your answers, its not such a cliche after all. Mattk - youre idea of hiding behind the telly is the best, that would definately be the safest place in the room....

Only 'monsters' that made me go behind the sofa were the Zarbies(sp), sort of giant ant things in Patrick Troughton's time.

The Zarbi appeared with William Hartnell in 1965

Not behind the sofa but I did peep through my fingers. William Hartnell was 'my' doctor and I think the best.

He had to be didn't he? I mean he was the one who started everything, it was he who gave us our first face to this character who was going to take generations everywhere. But for pure enjoyment, entertainment 'my' doctor has to be dear old Patrick Troughton...
