Why are the elderly so attention seeking?

Please don't see me as a "pensioner basher" in any way as this is a very serious and valid question as I do love the elderly and after all most of us become elderly at some point.
My question comes from hearing about many elderly people telling their relatives that they will kill themselves and they don't want to be seen as a bother etc.. But then raise all kinds of hell that do indeed cause bother and disruption, even here before I signed up when I read time to time I always see members that have been identified as elderly taking things to heart and then threatening to leave only to reappear several days later with a "Cooee Im baack" Why is this done? Is this maybe a form of loneliness and a way to see how many friends they have or maybe a mild form of a degenerating brain disease? This has had me perplexxed for a long time so any input into understanding this condition will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
One confused amy.

I must admit that I am am one of the old dodderers round the supermarkets nowadays. I would rather dash around but me arthritis won't let me. And if I am miserable and cantankerous then it is because I am in pain. I try very hard to be nice and smiley, but sometimes it is very difficult.
Surprise, surprise, Amy has been suspended!
Pasta- yes probably, i'll be the worst kind of old lady going!

But until i get to that age, i genuinely can't see why some (again, read some) are so downright mean spirited.

A pop at Bobbie? No lol, i didn't see that when I read the OP, sorry.
I agree with the OP.I had the most amazing grandparents and I loved and respected them.I have one remaining grandmother who is 101 this month (if she's still alive) and she is a hard hearted biatch who demands respect whilst thinking her age has given her the right to be a nasty vindictive old woman.
My mother is an attention seeking sh!t stirrer who thinks she is the family matriach-all she has done is destroyed my family.
Well I disagree Dris............I'm lovely.
it's only 'some' B00 because they may have been just as mean spirited and crochety when they were young. They say we just get worse as we get older......
So Craft is Dris's grandmother!!
So am I....... ;-))
I'm elderly, by your standards, and there are times when I think I'd give my right arm to be rid of my relatives.
They're round me like leeches, but then I'm very wealthy.
Pinki- despite what ive just said, im incredibly polite to customers (no honestly, i am!) in our shop, infact we all are.

And ot be honest, if i'd heard anyone being spoken to like that (young/old/whatever) I'd most definiately be complaning to head office. Have you done that yet? If not, why not?
ermm...*lovely*
I am polite to most people but I respect is earned and the elderly do not get it just because they are old.

As to grumpy and canterkrous because you're in pain... I'm in pain quite a lot these days but I was grumpy and canterkrous way before that... ;0)
hahha..we still yammering...and-as jan said....amy is a gonner....hmmmmmmm
And why has Amy been suspended?

I saw nothing to indicate that she was having a pop at another user? Granted, some of you obviously did, but still....not 100% proof positive is it?

Blimey!
My Grandad has got to be the grumpiest person I know. He's always been like that though...
I honestly dont think it's to do with old age. I think what hellywelly said was spot on. I know some extremely surly and rude 18 year old and some really sweet ones. The same with old folk like craft :o)
Youre not that much older than me tho craft :)
I hate to think what im gonna be like !! So long as im not like my Mother i'll be happy.

(I thought it was aimed at Bobbi as well)
I know Boo is lovely. She just pretends she is hard. She can't fool me though!!
Sandy, are you really wealthy? Do you want to adopt an old granny?
haven't read all this but my question would be why do the elderly insist on telling you how old they are all the time?
I quite fancy being a cantankerous, demanding old lady who causes bother and disruption. I am practising very hard!!
