Over the last couple of years i have developed a problem with my speech whereby i struggle to say certain words. My doctor dismissed it as nonsense but its really beginning to get me down. Also i have a best man speech to deliver this summer and its making me lose sleep with worry. Can anyone point me in the right direction? i am 31 years old and its only been with me for about 3 years.

I can understand what a major deal this is for you Brooky, and your doctor's attitude is a disgrace! A recent speech problem suggests an underlying traumatic cause, whether major or minor, but, very personal. You could try seeing another doctor in your practice. Just make an appointment for a day you know your normal doctor isn't there, and ask if you could talk to your c.p.n.-community psychiatric nurse. They are there to really listen to you and give you a chance to discuss how you are feeling. They could also suggest further ways to help you. Good luck :-)

Could it be related to stress? try breathing exercises its all about control and mind over matter. You can do that speech perfectly or if it's really bad and getting you down have a look around Google at sites like this-

They might provide you with information be strong, confident and mind over matter.

thanks for your suggestions. it gets worse when i have had a drink but its present all of the time. strangely enough it normally involves words beginning with t but can happen with others.
Try doing the speech with earplugs in, as daft as it sounds, it stops you listening to what you are saying, and trying to concentrate. It really does work.
try saying the word in your head first then repeat it out loud (a strategy for stammerers)
