I am off to Tenerife later this year and I want to take my Galaxy phone with me, it is on a contract with Virgin Mobile but I have heard of people coming home from abroad to really high phone bills so how do I avoid this ?

Make sure your Data Roaming is off and only use the internet when you wifi
You can access your Virgin account via your smartphone and track your unbilled calls
I agree and limit your phone use to the minimum for calls and texts - you also get charged to receive calls when abroad. Find a free app that lets you make calls when connected to the internet - I use whatsapp for example (although you can only connect with other people who also have whatsapp).

Thanks for the info Samuraisan, I have just had a little go doing what you said, quite easy when you know how, so hopfully no big phone bills to come home to.
Or be on holiday and tell people you can't speak on the phone. Most hotels will have access to a computer, where you can Skype if you are desperate. Try it, you might find you actually have something to talk to people about when you get back....
