It depends. How old is the orphan? How did they become an orphan?
They are people, just like everyone else. Why discriminate?
Much would depend on the era when they were orphaned. For example, not so very long ago here in Ireland orphaned children might have found themselves in the care of members of religious orders. Recent press reports suggest that they numbered more than their fair share or sadists and paedophiles among their ranks.
They can't have an easy start to their lives.
Very true Sandy. A friend of ours, not sure how old he is now, was in care in Ireland and was very badly physically abused (not sure about sexual) and a few years back he received a massive compensation pay out.
define your term first...... is an orphan simply because you no longer have living parents? If that is the case I have been one since I was 37. I am not sure what exactly you are asking here... just what people think about orphans or the wider and far reaching implications ofbeing an orphan....
Another point, though this doesn't only apply to orphans, children who are fostered are expected to look after themselves at too young an age. I'd suggest they might need continuing support into their early 20s.
I'd suggest they need continuing support forever...
Have you considered doing some proper research on the street or similar? If it's for a school or college project.
What's the difference? Street or AB? Still asking a bunch of strangers their opinions...
One aspect of being a foundling which is not often considered is the total lack of knowledge of one's background. I know a woman who as a baby was found on a church doorstep, and was brought up as an adoptee. She was very well cared for, but whenever she visited a doctor ( especially in pregnancy) she was asked " is there any ------ in the family ?" " Did your parents or grandparents ever suffer from ------ ?" whereupon she had to admit her unknown origins. Very embarrassing to have to tell people you were a foundling, rejected by those who are supposed to love you most .
I can see why you flunked, Umm. You can narrow your strangers to a specific town if you do it on the street.
In my view there is a difference between a child given up for adoption and a child whose parents are dead. The 2nd is what I would call an orphan but there are a lot more of the 1st category. What is your definition?
:)
Orcadians, now, are worthy of respect as they live in a fairly hostile environment.
"What the heck is an orchan?" That really made me giggle

Didn't Mork, of Mork + Mindy come from there?
Oh well remembered Sandy, forgot that, you're right. Mork was an Orcan
To be pedantic to the OP and to anyone else on this thread....an orphan is a child (or animal)deprived of father OR mother through death.

Both parents need not be lost to be an orphan.
^^I have always thought both parents had to be dead or 'unknown'
