I am going away to a holiday cottage in the new forest with my daughter & son in law & 2 year old granddaughter & I have just discovered that my son in law thinks I should pay half of the rental plus half of the car hire but I think it should be a third of the total cost who is right ?

It should be split between adults.
if you/they are quibbling before you even go...............id stay at home
A third seems about right, but it depends on the cost of teh extra room. If the room had to be paid for anyway then maybe they should expect you to paya nominal contribution- a third at most.
There is no right answer though.
Maybe you should day you can't afford that so may have to pull out. They are probably relying on some contribution so may compromise
Can you afford it? A third should be about right. Are you expected to baby sit? In which case maybe a bit less. Though if you want to keep the peace then maybe just grin and bear it. And pay up.
