Father's Day or Fathers' Day

Which is it? There have been very good arguments for both in the office this morning.

JJ, this Sunday.
It should Fathering Sunday;the traditional day for fathering; after Mothering Sunday. What's Father's Day, anyway? Another fake day for Hallmark to sell cards? It's not in the Church calendar.
Our local Oxfam shop has signs in the window advertising "Father's day" so I say that is the correct format.

:-)

andrew - are you the Apostrophe Police?
Can I make a late bid for Fathers day?
'I had to laugh when I worked out that Fathers' Day was 9 months before Mothers' Day!!!!!'

Don't know what you mean here as Mother's Day in UK was in March and Father's Day is this Sunday 17th June unless you are thinking about Father's pleasure giving need for Mother's Day :)
I think that the Apostrophe should be banned - then life would be simpler.
When it is advertised in card shops etc it is Father's Day as is Mother's Day, so I go with that.

@Andrew what happened to August in your list? my calculations still stand. :)
Ratter, if the day belonged to a father it would be Father's Day.

However, you say it belongs to fathers, so it should be Fathers' Day surely?
My Filofax says Father's Day so that's it for me. Anyway you don't give a card to your father saying Happy Fathers' Day in the plural do you.
