The relevant county council website will have information about the application process (and the associated deadlines).

e.g (Kent):

However many parents would want to start collecting information (either anectdotally or by reading prospectuses, prospectuses, Ofsted reports etc), about schools in their area, well before the application process is due to start.

It depends on the school. I registered my daughter with my preferred school when she started nursery.
