Here's one for you all, you Word Experts.

My speech mark button is on "Shift 2" - no issue with that.

I do have a problem though - it is typing effectively the right-side mark, the closing pair, ok but not the left side, the opening ones.

I don't what I have done but probably I have somehow stopped it from working by pressing a key - anyone know how to rectify the process.....

Many thanks in advance

I hope this is what you're looking for. To enable the "smart quotes" option, go into Tools > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat. There should be a tick box in there to replace straight quotes with smart quotes. Tick the box, press OK and give it a try.
In words 2010:-

go to File tab
select Options
then Proofing (3rd one down)
click on Autocorrect options (near the top)
select Autoformat tab
"straight quotes" with "smart quotes" - make sure is ticked
I was too quick to press the submit button. You should also enable the same "smart quotes" option in the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab. Then it will insert the correct opening/closing quotes automatically.

I've just tried it and it works.

Thanks Aquariel - this is really weird - on other word documents it seems to be working ok (on a sample of two documents) but not on my current text. I have tried your suggestion but no luck, other than cutting and pasting from above - which is a bit of a p-in-the-a

I may have found a solution - copy a para that was ok from above to below the paragraphs that are affected and then bring it up to the bottom of the text.....it now seems to work, though the affected paragraphs are still showing the problem.
What typeface are you using?
Is it constant over the whole document?
