Is it possible to have some sort of amendment to site rules that reminds people that revealing the result of a major sporting contest (or even the result or plot of a TV show) in the title or first post of a thread is incredibly antisocial and discouraged on AB?

It's not exactly rocket science to have a title that says, for example, "Murray Match" with an OP that simply says "Spoiler Alert".

Then you reply to your own thread with "Andy still Scottish after he tanks again" or "Andy the Brit rides on" as appropriate.

We've got the Cricket World 20/20 soon and then the Olympics later this year - both in time zones that mean people will want to watch recordings rather than 'live'.

Perhaps a banner saying "don't spoil it for others" over the Sport and/or News sections wouldn't hurt?

What a good idea. It's bad enough not being able to listen to the TV news when sporting events are in such a location that sensible human beings watch recordings rather than stay up through the night, without having to stay off AB as well.
That reminds me of a 'Likely Lads' episode where they were trying there hardest to avoid hearing the football score before they watched it on 'Match of the day!'
SPOILER! That match was called off due to bad weather!
I know...but they didn't know that at the time...
Not often I agree with you, SD, but it's my pet hate.
Maybe a banner notice, as you say, would warn the unwary.
I believe some do it to be bloody minded.
It's a site for sharing information not hiding it
steg's right. The internet wasn't built to keep secrets. If you want to not know something that's happened, it's just another medium you need to avoid, along with Twitter and all its friends.

The butler did it.
I always think AB could have a sub-title:
'Want to know who's died?-Hear it here first'
It's just so easy to share without spoiling it for later viewers...only takes a bit of thought.......
^See what I mean about 'bloody minded'.
It's even easier if you don't want to know something to not go onto a site called The AnswerBank
My only friends are on here, steggles. You wouldn't want me going lonely all day, would you?
What!!! I thought I was your only freind :(
The Eds will like that during the Olympics, won't they?

Is it asking too much for a little consideration? Nobody is saying don't post your excitement.....just do it in an unselfish way that doesn't deny others the excitement of a game...x
s-d - I completely agree & suggested the same a few years back -

http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Answerbank-Suggestions/Question1134270.html

Ed did reply there, to wit (sorry to remind you, Ed...) -

"Good idea. I'll do it today if I get time."

"I don't disagree that those who visit AB while not wanting sports results are living on the edge, but I think it's fair to ask people to put a spoiler notice when they're giving away things like:

1. Scores
2. Whodunnit in tonight's soaps (If it's from a magazine, rather than from the program itself - I suppose it's fair game after airing.)"

If a title in "Latest Posts" said something along the lines of "Chelsea v Arsenal"; "Murray v Djokovic"; "England v India"; "Eastenders Tonight", eg & etc, then anybody not wishing to know anything further simply doesn't open the thread & can avoid any discussion therein until they choose otherwise.

Back then some thought it a fair suggestion, some didn't but that's the nature of the beast that is AB.
Me personally, yes it's asking to much
I don't see how common courtesy to other ABers is too much to ask.

Very easy to still post and not spoil it for others using the suggestions above.

I hadn't seen LiK's 2012 thread - we are obviously singing from a delayed copy of the same hymn sheet :)
Mamy my answer to that would be the same as @14:33 and 15:08 x
No one is trying to hide anything - if you want to discuss a football match (for example) as it happens then fine, you can do so within the thread.

If the title screams the latest score or result and shows in Latest Posts then you have possibly spoilt it for others.

All that is required is to keep the discussion in the thread and the title neutral.
