Could you live without a car!!
With the cost of fuel/oil etc continuously rising could you live without a car or is it an essential part of your life, a car is just like a big money box always putting into it getting little out of it!!

I wouldnt say you get very little out of it, cars can give people much needed freedom especially if they have life limiting illnesses.

I could, but it would be harder. Mind you, aside from what I save with car expenses, I'd probably save elswehere too - for instance, only buying shopping I could carry, etc

No, I run Tai Chi classes in various locations from one mile to 26 miles away. I would not be able to get there without a car . Otherwise, possible but difficult and still more expensive than running a car, we would still need to use busses and taxis as we are a few miles out of the nearest town

also you have to bear in mind the almost extinction of local shops, people would be less reliant on cars if shops were more local.

I drive less than ten miles most weeks --- But attendance at examiners' meetings ( 100 mile round trip + the various materials/scripts etc. which I have to take ) and quiz presenting in the winter months, again taking various bits and bods, mean the answer is No.

I've never been able to drive but me and my other half got a car in the new year as he does.
We weighed it up as we both live and work in the city centre.
It's made a massive difference, being able to do a proper food shop (saves us a load of money on food shopping), it also helps with bulky or multiple items we wouldn't have been able to get on public transport.
We're more able to get and see friends and family more (and not relying on lifts or staying over places) and getting away for the evening, day or weekend for some quality us time together.
It's great to be able to get to medical appointments and the hospital without faffing on the bus too and not having to use public transport especially late at night.

Currently no, I need my car for my job, I have had a enforced period several years ago when I couldn't drive for a year and you know what.... It wasn't too bad at all

We are currently without a car as ours broke down a few weeks ago,my fiance has been travelling to work by train since and it is costing us a fortune-and he has to stand the whole journey as the train is always full!

I only use my car for shopping at the weekend!
I go to work on the tube and walk most places.

My insurance costs more a month than petrol (on an average month anyway) so I say we should invade Norwich Union, not moan at the Middle East problems.

i could not live with out a car i live in a village and we have about 4 buses a day ...

I live in a rural village where life would be extremely difficult without a car. I couldn't bear to be without one.
|

|
I could
Thankfully I work within walking distance
Although the buses are only one per hour they do run into the evening
I could shop in my local supermarket and get a cab home or go shopping with my mum once a month which I do now mostly, anyway
The only time I need a car is when I go on holiday - I couldn't lug all my luggage on the bus/train

We could not do without a car.
We live in a very small East DSussex village. The nearest (large) town is 10 miles away, where the nearest shops are.
There is only one bus(each way) a day through out village, and none at weekends or after 6pm.
If someone can suggest an alternative to a car I would be interested, and please don't say bicycle,as it's too dangerous on country lanes,AND I can't cycle with two supermarket bags on my handlebars!

No, I live in the middle of nowhere without any public transport and am unable to cycle or walk very far because of arthritis.
I don't like having to rely on my car but I can't do anything about it.

I wish I could but it isn't realistic. I live a mile away from the nearest bus stop which is okay and I could cope but I have to work until 9.30 some nights and the bus would get me to the stop at 10.30. I'm not a nervous sort but a mile along an unlit road in the middle of winter at that time of night is not my idea of fun! If bus services were improved I would use it more often.
However this week I have had to go out and about to various meetings so I would still need a car. I also use it to ferry my 80 year old mother around.

I need my car, I travel to work 54 miles each direction, 2-3 times a week. Hubby works from home, unable to sell our house to relocate so I need to travel by car.
