Electricity payments

Recently I switched electricity supplier as my old one decided to bump up the monthly payments by over 100%. I've already made the first payment to my new supplier, but now the old one has written to me to say that I owe them a fair amount off their balance.

My questions are, (a) is this normal practice, and (b) can I appeal against it? I don't want to pay twice for the same product, and to me this seems a little cheeky to say the least!

If you still owe money to your previous supply then it doesn't seem to me to be cheeky for them to ask for it. You wouldn't be paying twice- the bill will relate to underpayments from when you were with the previous supplier
However i'm surprised this has happened- I seem to recall that when I transferred thetransfer didn't go through until teh old account was settled
if the original company decided to up your monthly payments, it's not because they waNT you to paay more for your fuel, rather that you haven't paid enough. It is then safe to assume you have a debit with them. of course it's right if you are terminating your contract with them, that they will expect full payment of any arrears. From what i read in your question, if you do have a debit with them, they are asking you to pay for electricity you have already had, whereas the new company are asking you to pay for electricity you are having now, so not paying 2wice for the same product
You will only be charged by your previous supplier up to the day you changed supplier. So if in deficit you will have the balance to pay. Same if you had been in credit they would owe you.
