Career in marketing

So I've worked in sales for a few years now, and I want to branch out into marketing. I've been doing more and more promotion and advertising work as the credit crunch is hitting. I've found that I have a real flair for it, it really excites me and I enjoy it much more than sales.

The problem is how do I go about getting my foot on the ladder and getting into marketing full time? I've searched the net and it's all a bit confusing as to where to begin. I just need some contact numbers of people who can give me advice on where and how to start.
