Internet banking - what's the problem?
I bank on the internet. When I tell people, they look dubious, and tell tales of a friend of a friend who works in banking who says it's all a bad idea. But never any CONCRETE proof. So is there any, proof that is? What's the problem with internet banking? A.

All I know is I have been doing it for over ten years with no problems whatsoever. I love being in full control of my account.

I am operating 2 current accounts, 4 credit card accounts and 5 savings accounts by internet, and have done for years without a problem.
I have my sort code and account number on my eBay ME page so people can pay quickly and easily by direct transfer - no problems there.
Where I do get extremely annoyed is where people worried about buying from a dubious seller in case they lose their money (no way will they send cash, they really don't trust them) they are told to 'pay by credit card, you're covered then'.
Not strictly true, but this is a kind of gamble with someone else's money.
I have no doubt that some people have been victim to internet fraud - and I am sure that a large proportion of those people have been negligent in some way; replied to phishing emails, bought from dubious sites and so on.
I would find controlling my monies very difficult without online banking.

I had 3 accounts with internet access, the first had £1500 withdrawn which was refunded by the bank, the second had £1300 moved from savings to current account but I managed to cancel it before that went walkabouts too and the third one, well, the bank phoned me when a computer I had never used before was used to try to transfer funds. Have I got internet banking now. NO

Can you tell us the circumstances, JD?
How did they get access, do you know?
I mean, if the thieves stole your handbag/wallet and gleaned details from there, it would be one thing. If they just hacked into a totally protected account, it would be something else.

I too have banked on the internet for years, with mrltiple accounts.
I did have a message from the Bank about two years ago that someone had tried to access my account but had failed the security questions and they frose my account unti I contacted them and gave the correct security.
Snce then, nothing, but I always check carefully, keep my Virus checker, firewall and Ad-aware.Spybot up to date
Having said that, I am now keeping my fingers crossed!!!!

Thanks, androcles. That tallies with my experience and gut-feeling about these things.
I suspect (but I'm still willing to be convinced otherwise) that people whose internet banking has been compromised have done something wrong, like writing down their PIN and security answers, and then getting the information stolen.
But please, if you've got any concrete examples of totally innocent internet bank users getting screwed, please let us know the details.

Also be careful of emails that come through saying that they are from your bank and asking you to clickon a link and confirm your security answers..... these are usually fake. ALWAYS forward them to your bank for verification, they usually look very good and believeable.
Its usually e mails like this that cause the worry.

You want to bet, allen? I had money withdrawn from both my debit and credit accounts. it was a nightmare. The bank refunded it all in the end, and the culprit was traced to Amsterdam, where my details were ready to go on to an eastern bloc country. I'm saying no more - except that I'll never bank over the internet again, or even use a card to buy something!

I had two payments taken from two different credit cards for $140 two days apart.
When i checked with the card companies, they told me it was for an on-line gambling site in Amsterdam.
I don't gamble and I got my money back, but I still use my on-line banking as its so easy to check your accounts.

PS:
I forgot to mention that the only reason I noticed the two payments were taken from my account, (Sterling) was because they were in $$$$.
Otherwise I may not have noticed.
Silly me then, but now I check every penny!
