A basic savings account (only withdraw over the counter) will often have no credit check done.

Don't forget that banks are under obligation to provide basic banking facilities to everyone.

Though of course, you may not get a debit / credit card if you have very bad credit.
Dunno if Oneeyedvic means "basic" as a general descriptor or a bit of banking jargon.
You can go for any savings account and you'll not be credit searched. You can also apply for a Basic Bank Account which is a current account which all banks need to offer but with limited facilities : i.e. no overdraft and often no debit card.

I don't think banks can turn you down for one of those so there shouldn't be a credit search there either.
I do think there are some checks made even on a basic account.

A friend of mine recently opened an account with the Co-Op - she hasnt had a bank account for about 10 years and still had to jump through numerous hoops to get one. The problem was her address, although she has lived there 15 years, the house doesnt show as a house let in parts and this took some sorting. Her proof of benefit had to be on original stationery and not the photocopy she had requested from the benefits office. I dont think they will refuse one but they will ensure your ID is spot on!!!
