Press Coverage Of The Civil War's In El Salvador And Guatemala

During the 1980's, why did the anti leftist conflict in El Salvador get so much American press attention, while a similar anti leftist conflict in Guatemala, which was just as brutal and bloody, stayed totally off the media's radar -to the point that most Americans didn't even know it was happening? I presume one possible answer is the fact that perhaps Guatemala did not rely so much on US military aid funding; however, that may have not been the case.
