I have just received a R.A.N. from the Dept of Transport which I was going to deposit it in my bank account on Monday.A friend told me it is not a cheque (it looks like one to me) but just something sent to me to show that DoT will be paying it in to my account themselves.
Anyone know if this is correct?

Difficult to say without seeing it, does it look like a normal cheque with a Bank sort code number in the top right hand corner, and along the bottom there should be a cheque number, the sort code again and an account number.
Pay - Mr ImLostAgain and the amount in words and figures, and finally a signature, either in ink or lithograph.

If you have any doubt take it to the Bank, they will be able to tell you immediately.
An RAN is a notice of intention to pay. If the DoT have your bank account details it will be paid into that.

Thank you both.
First, ubasses it looks like a cheque just a little shorter.
Yes there is a sort code at the bottom (& top right) along with the account number.
And yes it is signed, by the assistant paymaster no less.
Zacs-Master, they do have my details so I'll wait and see.
Thanks again.
Did it have 2 parts with a perforation. If so maybe part was the 'advice' and part a cheque.
Would do no harm taking it to the bank.
sounz like a cheque to me .....
