I want to send a small amount, probably less than £100 to a friend in Canada. Her daughter and family have had a house fire and lost absolutely everything, and we would like them to buy something for themselves. I have friend's name and address, but no bank details. What is the best - ie the most inexpensive way - to send the payment.

Send travellers cheques - M&S.....or even cash in a Xmas card.
Western Union is the safest and its not too expensive.

But that is not secure, and will more than likely just disappear in the post. I need a secure system please.
If you don't have their bank details then all I can think of is to send them a cheque. Takes time and costs money £20/£30.
How safe is it to send cash in a Xmas card, DTC?
Western Union is an alternative.....

travellers cheques are insured, jamesnan.
Just looked on Western Union website, it'll cost £8.90p to send £100 to Canada, it'll be there in minutes.
Never had any issue with it in the past - just done it for the mater to her g-kids in the States, though not a £100
If you both have paypal you can use that and they don't seem to charge for it.
Do you have her/his e-mail, PayPal may be an option......
You will need to nominate a specific bank or Western Union branch in Canada, St.Peter.
Don't know how much they charge.
Sir Oracle, it costs £8.90, the sender pays that, the recipient pays nothing, they just need i.d., Western Union will give the sender a ref number, the sender then contacts the recipient and tells them the ref number, easy really. I've used them many times without a problem.

Didn't even think about PayPal, thanks for the suggestion. I will find out if she will be happy for me to use that. Thanks for the suggestions
Paypal is the best way safe, cheap and instant . All you and the recipient need is an email address . In fact I think it is free to send money to 'family and friends' at least within the UK it is free. Western Union is not safe no matter what people say.
Stop looking for problems and send it with PayPal you don't even need to have an a/c.
It will cost about £3.60 to send £100.00.
Whoever receives the money will need to have a PayPal a/c ... they can easily open one and it won't cost them a penny.
Isonomous
Ignore me, wrong thread.
That's fine St. Peter as long as there is a Western Union branch close to the recipient.

...travellers cheques are insured,...

Not in this circumstance. You sign them when you buy them and again when you cash them. As you are not in Canada that won't be possible.
