I've no idea, I appreciate it probably wasn't a popular opinion, or indeed a very nice suggestion, however there was nothing immoral, illegal or indeed wrong in anything I suggested. I do think that Sin's friend could have handled things better from the start, Ebay is reasonably efficient in dealing with dodgy sellers given the chance but it'a no use...

Should have raised a complaint with Ebay first before any time limits expired.
I think your' friend' will probably get reported and banned from EBay. He could have reported the seller as 'item not received' after 48 hours and he chose not to -had he done this and the seller not responded he would have got a full refund with 7 days. To be honest he sounds a bit wacko risking getting banned and losing his large feedback score for the sake of a tenner.

My friend is a honest trusting person and he believed the seller was going to sort it out
Question Author
He had said that he had put in an insurance claim and that it was ongoing
I think what your friend did was pathetic and he'll probably get banned for it.

kvalidir what a silly reply I would have thought better of you. If you follow protocols on Ebay then you will get things resolved especially if you are the buyer as they tend to come down on the side of the buyer. Putting your Ebay account in jeopardy when you are in the right is stupid and actually makes the buyer look an idiot.
He's not a courier, Kvalidir. He's simply a broker for CityLink, so that's why I suggested that any complaint should have been made to CityLink, and not to him.

If you bought a rail ticket through a third party, such as Trainline.com, and your train was cancelled or heavily delayed, you'd complain to the train operator rather than to Trainline.com. If you bought a ticket through Ticketmaster for a West End show and rain came pouring through the theatre's roof half way through the show, you'd complain to the theatre, not to Ticketmaster. Similarly if you purchase a courier service through a broker, and something goes wrong with that service, you should complain to the courier company, not to the broker.
Sinderella, please tell your friend not to trust anyone on Ebay. I've had people saying they've not received items, then when I've produced proof of postage they have all of a sudden 'found' the card the post office left. I've also had someone claim they were sent an empty box, which there was nothing I could do about and thankfully it was for an item under £10 so I had to suck it up. Apart from *** off Ebay he could be setting himself up for a libel suit. How much was this parcel worth that got damaged/lost?
For the problem we had there was no redress on Ebay, and for the issue with sin's friend apparently there isn't now either as they are out of time. In these circumstances you can either tolerate being stolen from or not. I chose not. I personally wouldn't have done what Sin's friend did, as you rightly point out it jeopardises his account, but I sure as hell made sure we got back our property from the courier who thought he could do whatever he liked by being a nasty as he was. I don't think I ought to have to apologise for that tbh, and I'm not going to.
The ebay case raising process is there to be used.
A slanging match will get the person (whether right or wrong on a matter) banned.
Your friend should have raised a case, got their money back, and left it at that.
Believe in Karma. I bought from a seller, they didn't deliver, they tried to string me along with emails, so I raised a case the day before the time ran out - it is the buyers responsibility to report a disgruntlement within the allotted time frame, ebay won't jump up and protect you, you have to inform them of the situation - I got my refund, shrugged my shoulders and got on with the rest of my day. Some people can't be trusted in life, some ebay sellers are no different. C'est la vie in my opinion.
kvalidir I don't expect an apology -you should not apologize for a difference of opinion . In this case we are both probably wrong because if he was an agent for City Link then this should have been the first phone call made and made again and again until the problem was resolved. the OP was asking our opinion on what he did regarding the malicious item he posted on EBay and I think we both agree this was wrong
Peaspeculiar -Exactly! I have an Ebay shop and sell hundreds of pounds worth of stuff a month -if you play by the book the system works but there are both bad sellers and bad buyers, sometimes you have to just shrug, get your money back and move on.
I think your friend might run into trouble with the use of the word "dishonest" when it comes to describing the seller. There are many forums whereby people can post their opinions of services on the internet - Tripadvisor, Reevoo, Skytrax etc. I completely agree that consumers should be able to post their opinions about companies as long as it is made clear that they are personal opinions. However, when one gets into the realms of describing companies/persons as dishonest, there is a libel implication.

He is being dishonest by ignoring the emails(non threatening)and refusing to hand over the claim details
city link want a customer number.the agent has it
ebay want an item number.its vanished after 30 days
same with paypal
Best of luck to your friend. In my opinion con merchants are skilled at getting nice people to give them the benefit of the doubt until eBay's indefensible time limits run out, or some other problem occurs, and eBay can then take the side of the con artist against the decent victim. What they can do is take the hit, realise "they" are all out for themselves and don't give a flying ^$&^%&£^ about you, and be wiser next time. And learn to accept other's unfeeling comments about how it is somehow the victim's fault.
Why buy a courier service off eBay when you can just use people like Myhermes or Collectplus both of them have a direct link to eBay so you can link to the courier service direct by eBay item number ? I have just sent a 5Kg parcel by Myhermes it cost £5.49 for an eBay item with insurance and tracking.
Sinderella - Ebay item numbers do not disappear after 30 days. I can still access item numbers I bought or sold up to 18 months ago (I've just tried it). The courier is an Agent for City Link and I'm sure all the details could be found through the post code of the person the parcel was supposed to be delivered to and the name of the Agent. If he believes the item has been stolen ( he has another 'item' for sale giving a long narration on how this bike has been stolen by this courier) why has he not contacted the Police? Once the Police are involved I bet the customer number is found pdq.
