I was on my way out at 5.30pm when my mobile rang I answered it it was a very bad line and think an overseas call , not Asian or Nigerian voice sounded more Middle Eastern but the line was very crackly I think on purpose , he had my name correctly and told me I had applied on line for a £2000 loan and it had been approved, at this stage I kept repeating I have not applied for a loan and I do not want a loan go away, I then terminated the call he tried to call me back by then I am starting the car so I said I am driving just go away, five mins later I get a text which says :-
HI DEE YOUR LOAN HAS BEEN APPROVED PLS CALL O2882440400 REF TOM 27101093
I have text them back to say I have not applied for a loan and I do not want one,, my phone is Pay As You Go and only has £20 credit so they cant gain much from that, its obviously a scam so I have no intention of calling them back
What should I do now I am back home do I have to notify my bank in the morning, my credit cards people or the police ?or do nothing, its quite scary as they had my name correct and I do buy some things on line.
what to do next ?

do nothing
Do nothing and if they call you again, hang up. If they text you again, delete. Do not respond to them in any way at all. Or have a word with your local constabulary, showing them the text. It may help to put your mind at rest.
Just googled that number looking for a scam but nothing showed. I'd agree with black cat.
definitely a scam - no idea how it would go from here; but just ignore it. You haven't applied for a loan, they don't have your bank account, they don't have your credit card number, and the police wouldn't be interested. As long as you're sure you haven't given away anyd etails about yourself, there's nothing to worry about.

They could have got your phone number from anywhere, but that seems to be all they've got.
Add their number to your address book and then 'block' that contact.
Make sure you don't delete the text from them, you could call your bank for reassurance. Good luck, don't worry, let us know what happens. If they ring just keep hanging up immediately but keep all texts until you are sure no money has been taken.
If in doubt, copy and paste a suspicious number into google

(in this case, the first character was a capital O, which I corrected to a zero)

Which lists it as a loans company.

It could be a low-level scam where you ring them to enquire what's gone wrong and they charge you at premium rates, or they 'phish' for your house address and other details (ask them to tell -you- what address is on the loan and what bank account the money went to: do not volunteer this information to them).

It could be a more serious scam whereby someone has used your phone number and name to apply for a loan, paid into an account they have access to. This is the more unpleasant option because it would have to be a relative, friend or acquaintance. :-(

if worried contact your bank in the morning, don't phone, but go there if you can.

the only thing I have been giving out my name & phone number recently is when I have been looking for cheap flights to USA.
Thank you all for your quick responses, much appreciated, I am 75 years young and can do without this hassle, normally I am very level headed but this sort of thing it scares the *** out of me because I am going into unknown territory and my computing skills aren't great . Thank you all.
