Are you disputing that you have a debt at all, or just the size of it?

Just asked for a copy so I can A work out who it is for as I do not recognise the trading name, also I want to see what the balance was from when what has been paid to date etc but they are refusing to give this unless I pay for this
Perhaps get hold of the original company with whom you have the debt to ask what the balance of the debt is claimed to be.
Since you've now been successfully tracked down by a debt chaser, you are unlikely to manage to avoid the whole issue.
No it's not correct, if they want you to pay then surely they have to tell you what it's about.
Tell them to write to you giving you all the details. If they won't it's probably a scam.
Ask for copies of the invoice(s).

If you don't recognise the company name how can you owe them money.
Rubbish i'm having an argument with a debt collection firm at the mo, i'm refusing to budge until they provide orignal invoices.

I agree, I want to know when this debt is from a signed copy of the agreement and to know how much has been paid what if any additional charges mayhave been addded etc.

Why should I pay for this information, surely it is a legal document that should be provided free of charge in order to proof the balances etc.
I agree that they should provide the info free of charge as a one-off given that there has been a change of owner concerning the debt, and should provide periodic statements at regular intervals. However I expect some debtors do try to fob off creditors by continually demanding statements, copies of agreements etc as a stalling tactic, and maybe there comes a point when charges should be applied

These guys are still chasing me however, it gets a lot more confusing.

I have refused to pay for the inforamtion as I feel this should be provided free of charge, I asked for a signed agreement, the balance date last payment made etc etc, however, I have checked my credit file and this does not even show on there, are this company trying it on should this show my my credit file if this was outstanding would there be any reasons it does not show ?
