Should I have to pay to return a faulty item?

I bought a 10" Android Tablet from Toy R Us just after Christmas. After very little use it has gone faulty (after 28 days). I am being told by the store that I must deal with the manufacturer direct. Having discussed it with the manufacturer they agree there is, possibly, a software issue. I am being told that I have to send this back to them - at my own cost.

I am a bit put out by this. Am I within my rights, as this is a faulty product, to get the store to exchange it? Why should I incur a shipping cost when it is in warranty?

Your contract is with Toys R Us, not the manufacturer.
Take it back to Toys R Us and ask for a refund.
I`m surprised such a well established store would pull such a fast one. As mentioned, your contract is with Toys R Us. No way should you have to pay for sending it anywhere either. Ask to speak to the manager of Toys R Us if you don`t get any joy from the staff.
A quick scan through Google will show that Toys R Us are not exactly service oriented.

You could try the Chief Executive. David Rurka · http://www.toysrus.co.uk … but all the signs are he is not readily contactable.
I agree with the otherws, your contract is with Toys R us. but a phone call to trading Standards may get you some good advice and the Company will probably be more helpful when you tell them where the advice came from. Surely they won't want trading standards taking it any further.
hc4361 and 237SJ are spot on with this.
What you need to do:
1) Go to ToysRUs and ask to speak to a manager - ask them for a refund or replacement
2) If they do not, then from the store, call up Trading Standards and explain to them that a local business is breaking the law by trying to get out of their legal obligations.
3) When you get a refund, go to your local Apple store and buy a decent tablet :-D
