To Register As A Charity Or Not?

Greetings each. I have recently taken the initiative to attempt restoration of the OLDEST Wurlitzer theatre organ in UK, which is located in the Congregational Church, Beer, Devon. UK. Please see www.beerwurly.co.uk for further details. We have now been quoted £10,500 for initial essential work to be carried out. As part of our fundraising efforts we have arranged a series of concerts by professional performers. I already know that many provincial organ clubs have encountered problems with HMRC regarding financial issues in this area, but I think there may be some benefit in us (or the Church itself) being registered as a Charity. I am currently looking into various grants, including Heritage Lottery etc, but am more concerned at the moment about possible tax liabilities Does anyone have any thoughts on this or alternatively, advice on how to best proceed? Well done for saving one of these wonderful instruments.
I don't know whether the Information Department of the Charity Commision might be able to help you. Alternatively, it's possible that somebody at HM Customs and Revenue might be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Whoever.
Thanks for your interest.
Since posting this question I have found that the Church IS registered with the Charity Commission, although it took some time to find their registration number.
I have now contacted the CC to verify that "us" as a fundraising body - "us" includes one of the Church's appointed Trustees - can legitimately use the registration number for fundraising purposes.
I don't really see a problem with it, especially as the organ is the property of that Church!
