I've provided addresses for sort codes on AB on many occasions but no-one has ever thanked me or given an explanation of how the information was useful. I can't see the point of knowing the location but I'm happy for someone to convince me otherwise. While I look up the answer please can you enlighten me sue000999 as to why it might be useful, 'cos I'm curious

Question Author

thank you factor30

I am trying to confirm bank details for a family member who is dyslexic following a brain trauma. I have to send an inheritance to him.

Thanks for at least saying thankyou and providing some information. I don't want to pry about inheritances etc- I just want to understand why people want to trace branch addresses from sortcods.
But I'm afraid I still I don't understand the relevance of the bank address in your case. If the sort code and account number are known the money can be paid in anyway or by electronic transfer. The cheque doesn't have to be posted to a paticular branch does it. And isn't branch address on your family member's cheques.
I'm still puzzled

But you haven't confirmed bank details - it's quite possible that a different branch of the same bank in the same area - or even of a different bank - will have a very similar sort code.

And you haven't verified the account number which is just as important and easier to get wrong. (8 numbers, no gaps - at least the sort code is three separated dinomes).

Far safer to send a cheque in these circumstances.

If you get a transfer wrong it may be a hell of a fight. The wrong recipient may well take the view 'it's their (or more likely 'there') mistake, I can keep it'. Legally he's wrong, but it may prove next to impossible to find out who he is and retrieve the money

As I said on another section the bank address is often needed when filling a Direct Debit mandate.

I would agree with you factor30 that it's not actually that relevant but that doesn't stop people asking for it.

Account number and sort code are included on most bank cards so those details are normally at hand, the address however is not.

good answer - although I don't understand why you need to set up a direct debit in order to get an inheritance to a dyslexic family memeber with brain injury.
On DD mandates I suspect it's okay just to put Bank head oice
