How on earth did this young boy get hold of his fathers shotgun ?

Surely there has to be some kind of regulation in America, about guns being stored somewhere safe and out of the hands of children ?

Chilling figures from the Land of the Free ::::: "The Gun Violence Archive, a not-for-profit organisation that compiles data on gun violence in the US, says 559 children aged 11 or under have been killed or injured in the United States in gun violence so far this year"

The father of the boy should be charged !
But if a gun was stored safely, in a gun safe for example, it wouldn't be readily available when it was needed.
NRA excuse no 20
The US gun lovers train their kids as young as 5 on how to use a gun.

Have Americans become so desensitised to gun violence that a small child can possibly things its a good idea to murder another child ?

I agree with Bobsy here.....the child's father should have been arrested.

Canary...I doubt whether a child of 5 could even hold a shotgun properly.
I wonder what the age of criminal responsibility is there?
"Surely there has to be some kind of regulation in America, about guns being stored somewhere safe and out of the hands of children ? " - This is the land of the free Mikey, in most states you can walk down the road with 2 six guns in holsters like Wyatt Earp! I don't believe they have any rules about gun storage. You need a permit for a concealed weapon but not for unconcealed.
At 11 one wonders if he could tell the difference between play and make-believe and the inability to reset real life and make it all ok again.

I guess it is a risk gun owning supporters think worthwhile. 559/74200000 = 0.0007% killed or injured.
Tennessee supports the Death Penalty, so the kid will end up in the Chair.
The pro gun mob argued that if the students at the Oregon college were armed they could have defended themselves......are they going to tell us this 8 year old girl should have been sporting a Glock for her own protection?
Interesting point talbot.
I was taught to shoot at 7 years old. I was taught safety while handling guns from about the time I could understand speech (the gun is always loaded the horse always kicks that sort of stuff) Never carry an unbroken shotgun while out shooting climbing over gates etc. If this child picked up his dads shotgun i would presume it was a 12 bore and that the gun was loaded and ready to shoot. This is the parents fault this tragedy happened not the fault of the gun - you cannot blame inanimate objects for the stupidity of humans. We kept guns in a cabinet with a chain through mainly because a few were very valuable but still had a rough 12 bore under the bed. I'm not sure about the USA but they have recently RELAXED firearm laws in Canada
Retrochic, how many times have you had to use the gun under the bed ?
Far from being advised to keep guns locked up mikey, US citizens are advised to keep guns where they can be grabbed instantly!
The argument is that if you are threatened you need to react immediately not having to wait while you go and unlock the gun safe!
It would appear that Massachusetts is the only state to require guns be stored locked. Other states have far more lax requirements. Scroll down the page for a summary.

Plenty of choices for a young girl about town in the land of the free (free to shoot each other).

This would appear to be an accident waiting to happen then, if this child could get hold of his fathers gun so easily.

When will America wake up to the fact that they have a serious problem with guns ?
Canary -the gun was under the bed in Canada not the UK as its against the Law!! the gun was taken out quite a few times - mainly to chase cayotes away from the back yard and once a moose that was eating my veggie garden.
