Pill Gun For Cats

I have never given a cat daily medication before and I am not looking forward to it.

Thankfully it is not Princess Stroppy who has to get the pill (she would hospitalise me within days) ~ it is Frankie. I know 'how' to do give the pills but am not really sure which Pill Popper or Pill Gun is best.

I will try out putting the small tablet (Prednisolone - half a 5mg tablet) in a bit or food or treat. Frankie is a devious little illegitimate thug, so I want to make it as pleasant experience as possible so that he won't start hiding from me.

• If you have a pill gun where did you get it. Is it idiot proof?
• Treats with pockets for Pills - was your cat fooled?
• Where did you but the pocket treats?

I like the funny instructions that is all over the web - I get the feeling that is how it is actually going to be.

We don't start taking the tablets for a few weeks.

Tried the pill popper, nasty....ended up crushing into Dairylea, or Ice-cream sorted.
susan, what is wrong with Frankie ? ( is it related to his asthma )
not cats, but I tried the pocket treats for dogs and they were a total fail. Can your cat have cheese? If you gently nuke a cheese slice in the microwave, it will go like putty and you can bury the piece of pill in the middle of the ball and roll it completely smooth. The cheese has quite a strong smell and MAY work!
Cats love liver. It's OK for them in small amounts. Could you hide the pill in a piece of raw liver?
No need to nuke diarrhoea,

Jeez wept, glad I caught that 'correct'......what I actually typed was "no need to nuke Dairylea,"..crush medication, and mix into it. I buy it by the tub when my critters are poorly.
ferlew, you just gave me a spit my drink at the screen moment!
The advantage with the cheese slice method is that its cleaner than dairylea and also that the pill is encapsulated and stays encapsulated.
I just grab em, chuck the tablet to the back of their mouth then tickle their throat until they swallow it.
They don't like it but it's soon over with and nobody gets hurt.

Frognog - your method I have tried many times with dogs. Even really big dogs are easy to handle compared to a cat.

Anne - yep, his asthma. It worries me more than him. The monthly trip to the vet is awful, catching him is a nightmare. Once we get home he cries pathetically - even after using the Feliway spray. Uncle Andrew them Dreamies for Xmas so has to be bribed to debut up with those.

Sandy - the vet suggested Tuna, but not sure I could actually touch Liver!

Woof and Ferlew - they don't get much "human" food but Frankie is keen on cheese. I will have to try it out.

I will order another Ventolin inhaler as a back-up.

I am SO glad that I don't have kids. Being mentally unbalanced at the best of times is a challenge, having a chronically sick kid must be almost as bad as having a poorly feline master.

Thanks all of you.

i'm giving murph a thyroid tablet everyday, i have cut up chunks of various types of meat, chicken, steak, mince, hot dogs and put them in the freezer, i take one chunk out a day and cut into two, one of them i make a slit in the side and shove the pill in there. (occasionally i mold some cheese round the pill but she does seem to sense it more with cheese)

then she gets one non doctored one so she eats the second one right of the bat unsuspectingly. still have the odd days when she is not having it at all and i have to force them down her. i really hate those days, i want to cry when i'm doing it and she properly sulks afterward.

Poor wee innocent Murphy.

Frankie had a steroid jab last week and it will start to run out after about three weeks. The main problem is that, apart from Topside of beef, he doesn't like human food very much.

I think that I may have to just see how it goes. I am sure that some days will result in a battle. Giving him his inhaler twice a day lasted a while but he started running away from me every time I went near him.

At least it isn't little Miss Pitbull - she is mellowing as she gets older but she is no way as laid back (cowardly actually) as her brother.

There should be a warning given out with tiny cute little kittens ~ advising the humans about the quirks of the feline.

i don't think half a 5mg. tablet will be very large susan, maybe best to crush it . would she eat tinned tuna/salmon ?
My kitty responds well to being held like a baby (on his back) by my husband whilst he tucks his legs in and I hold his mouth open and drop it in. The tablets always get swallowed first time and prevents stress to a very stressy puss in general.
our cat has his tablets in a ball of philidelphia and garlic cheese never fails
