Lord Freud And The Minimum Wage For Disabled People

During a meeting at the Conservative conference last month, Lord Freud told a Tory councillor: 'You make a really good point about the disabled. There is a group where actually as you say they are not worth the full minimum wage.'

He also went on to say that there are people who want to work for under £2 and provision should be made to enable this.

I suspect that people actually don't want to undercut the minimum wage if at all possible.

And it's more than a little curious to identify the disabled as being those who deserve less than the minimum wage in any case. If you're able to do the job, then surely you should be paid the wage for that job.

Or am I being naive?

I suspect no one is worth the full minimum wage, they are worth a lot more. A living wage at least.
SP nieve? Never! Even government ministers can't help spouting off when they think fringe conference meetings are secret meetings of the worst kind!
// There is a group where actually as you say they are not worth the full minimum wage. //

The concept of being worth a 'full' minimum wage is meaningless. If it's the minimum wage, that's the minmum amount you get. The clue's in the name.
@SP

People who "want to work for £2/hr"??

Is that a "Life on Mars" reference? People who think it is still the 70s?

It's not often one gets to use the phrase which involves rockets, shoving and an orifice but this has to be one.

Light the blue touch paper and stand well back…

;-)
Isn't this the same guy who, a couple of years ago, was suspected of having said that the grass-roots Tory supporters were "swivel-eyed loons"? Yes, I know that Lord Feldman was also believed to have uttered these words but...whoever...isn't it wonderful that Freud is a Welfare Reform minister?
dave has distance himself from this prats words, but not sacked him yet. But there is still plenty of time ...come on dave...do the decent thing !
he sounds a trifle unworldly, doesn't he? Perhaps too much so for politics.
Do people have call this person lord when speaking to him .Rather be trampled on by a herd of maurading goats .
Is he the one who said 'menial people should get menial pay'? Oh no, that was you on another thread, SP.
Lord whatever his name needs his knackers nipping.
Come to think about it wasn't it better he said that rather than saying build more schools hospital and look after the needy cause then we would know he was lying but I think he means this.
jsut googled this guy's photo and realised I used to know him decades ago... he was quite good looking even back then. But really he should watch his words.
No relation to Clement then, jno.
it shows exactly what the tory party attitude to the poor and vulnerable in out society really is......how people miss the 'i'm alright, so i couldn't give a flying f***' about little, insignificant you is really beyond me. as a disabled nurse, i really feel i deserve £2 an hour for the work that i do. what a complete and utter a**. they are intent on wiping out the welfare state, the nhs and even our country's assets (like the channel tunnel) for a quick, insignificant buck. they are the stupidest people on the planet.
Sounds like he is another defector for the UKP. Even the Tories are not extreme enough for him.

I said that?

Really?

Doesn't sound like me.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I honestly can't remember it. Have you got a link? And as a sidebar, do you have a comment on what Lord Freud said?

I suspect you may have me mixed up with some other AB member. I say that because I've just entered a search for 'menial', and can see no thread I've been involved in.

What was the context? I'm genuinely interested.

Have to leave this thread for a while as we're watching series three of Homeland and it's taking all my powers of concentration to keep up with the plot.
If one googles menial work should get menial pay
only schweiks contribution comes up
impressive that in two hours it gets identified and filed on the internet

I have to s ay I was shocked
it is more expensive to be disabled than able-bodied.....

Lord Freud of the Nasty Party indeed
TonyAV, yes, I think he is, as he's a descendant of Sigmund and so was Clement (and Lucian). CBA working out what sort of cousins they were, though.
