Anyone notice how these payday loan companies in part due to their bad press are branding themselves with 'bright and breezy' names like Sunny, Tangerine and Peachy. Rather ironic when a number of them have heaped misery on people.

You used to see exposés of loan sharks on consumer affairs programmes. These people are loan sharks in fancy suits hiding behind glib TV ads.

Would you take a loan from "Greedy Beggers", "Dick Turpin Enterprises", "Usury is Us" or "In Debt Forever"?

Obviously, as in any advertising, the company must appeal to the consumer, and calling themselves Sharks-R-Us or Misery Incorporated, or even Treats.com (You pay up or we send the boys round - what's hard about that?) are not going to generate the business they are looking for.

It is cynical - but so is money-lending with four-figure interest rates.

but its no different from any other branding..."Utterly Butterly" yoghurts that blare that they are zero fat and conveniently forget the sugar, holiday ads that show the facilities completely empty apart from the ecstatically happy perfect family...shall I go on?

Everyone wants a good branding name and who wouldn't wanna sound good among their market? It's just fair.
