Energy Prices

We've just moved house and are supplied with Gas by British Gas and Electricity by EDF on Standard Tariffs/payment by cheque until we tell either of them what we want to do - Dual Fuel/different tariff or switch to other providers. When we do decide we'll select dual fuel (if best option) and monthly direct debit.

I've tried comparison and switching websites but unless you already know how much you currently use per month, I haven't found them much use. You end up answering general questions about size of house and expected usage. For me to compare providers, would it be easier just to know how much each charge per unit/standing charge etc. Is there a website that lets you compare costs per unit?

It's easier to use the comparison sites. Just make an estimate of current bills. If you are not sure make 2 or 3 estimates- maybe higher and lower end of the likely range- and see if you get the same cheapest supplier each time.

It would be good if we could compare unit charges but they deliberately make it too complicated with standing charge/no standing charge options, higher rate for first X units then lower rate for the balance, economy 7 , dual fuel discount, DD discount, paperless billing discounts etc. And some give a discount/rebate at the end of a set period- often 12 months. It's just too messy
