My wife has a credit card in her maiden name and there is some money on it (not much 500). I am due to get a new card and I want to know can I transfer the amount from her card onto my new card therefore getting the 0% on the balance transfer.

Is her card still valid?
If so, there shouldn't be a problem.
IMO you can transfer a balance to your card from wherever you like, all you do is ring them up and give them the numbers off the card with the balance, and they'll move it to your new card. They won't mind where you are transferring it from. There will be a charge, usually in the region of 3%.
Bear in mind that you always get charged a fee for the transfer itself.
