Checking credit references

How can I best get this checked? Some b******s have stolen my info from somewhere and have tried to get a loan from Nationwide. They wrote to me today. They won't give me much info - which annoys me too! After all its my identity these idiots are trying to use. I will need to check my credit reference soon, to make sure that no problems have been caused by this. Is there any way I can find out more about how this happened - further details of the attempted fraud etc? Where is the best place to check my credit reference without paying for it? Thanks
