Does any one know the scale of compensation BT pay when your phone is out of order for a few days?

There is normally a standard time to fix the fault (don't know what it is about 2 days at a guess). Then they will take off money from your next bill for every day you are without depending on the phone plan you have. So if you spend �20 per month they would divide that by the month then by the days you were without. This would amount to peanuts in the long scheme of things unless your normal phone bill was astronomical.
