lump on back of neck

i will go to drs, but given my anxiety disorder, it would save a couple of sleepless nights if anyone can help.
I've just found a hard painless lump, about as big as alarge pea. It's on the back of my neck slighty on one side, just on the hairline.
Any ideas?

ok...........now i'm thinking no-one is answering 'cus it must be something horrid :(
In the skin or below the skin?
Question Author
under the skin
I vaguely remember having that once and it was just a swollen gland from an infection
just to put your mind at rest, i would diagnose it as a hard painless lump.

(it's probably completely harmless)

aw, fanks.
i feel better already!
It's a strange place to get a lump. Only your doctor can advise you really.
Highly unlikely to be anything to worry about.
Sounds like a sebaceous cyst to me. I have a few on my head and have had a couple of large ones removed. I would get it checked by your doctor though.
sounds like a raised lymph node, normally comes up if you are under the weather or have an infection
Very likely just a cist and nothing to lose sleep over, or your brain has slipped. lol ♥
or it may be a little burrowing worm and by tomorrow it will have burrowed its way out.
I'm with the sebaceous cyst movement! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebaceous_cyst

but you need to go to the doctors as we're just plebs.
I agree with the cyst too, had one on my eyelid and had it removed because it was visible otherwise would not have bothered.
mamya.... youve had an eyelid removed? 'blinking' eck!

thanks everyone - that's just what i needed! ♥♥♥
carlton, a brain hernia?
I should have used the `ABS Check` button for cyst. sorry.
jan i once had one of them on my chest inbetween my boobidoos a few years ago, i was a bit worried, well alot worried if im honest, but i never went to the docs mind - im the sort to bury my head..
anyway, thankfully it turned out it was nothing to worry about - after a few days i happened to give it a lil squeeze, you know as you do, and some lovely gunk came out of it - just like a snake coming out of its basket when its being charmed! lol .... (strange description i know lol, but tis true!) .. ooh and nicely satisfying at the time it was too ;o/ ... and such a relief it was nothing serious
so hopefully yours is nothing to worry about too cris,
see how it goes and in a few days if youre still a bit worried pop to your docs to put your mind at rest x
I'm with cazz on the lymph nodes. Googling shows there are some in the neck where you describe and just mean you are fighting some infection - have you had a cold lately? Whatever we are just guessing but whichever it is it's nothing to worry about. See your doc to put your mind at rest. Sleep well.
