I mean no disrespect to Ice.Maiden, but my advice to you - based on past experience of questions involving Latin on AnswerBank - is to check with an 'expert' whatever answer(s) you get here. After all, you intend to put the answer indelibly on your own skin!
For example, if your local secondary school has a Classics Department or even just a solitary Latin teacher, try to get a response from him/her. An alternative is to approach a local Catholic priest, particularly an older one, as they will probably still have Latin at their fingertips, as it were.

Bearing in mind that mine is as open to doubt as anyone else's, here's my answer...

Ut Tartarum transes, perge!

That's literally, word for word, 'When hell you are crossing, continue!' (Remember, Latin grammar and word-order are not the same as English.)

There are websites aimed at the actual translations people have inked in to their skin... particularly for Japanese/Chinese symbols... And as funny as I find them, I'm so glad that my tattoo is not particularly original! I agree entirely with Quiz Monster, go and consult an actual expert on this or you'll probably end up with a travel brocher on your arm.

how about
when you think you want a tattoo - don't
... profound at 18 isn't quite so meaningful when you are 30

65% of all British tattoos are misspelled or misquoted

will you still be going through hell when you are 60
by 60 you'll be overflowing with your own thoughts
will you remember what it means when you are 70

as for approaching an older priest - it's not just a latin book he'll have his fingers in.

Good point AC. My tattooist has a notice. "My tattoos last longer than most relationships." Took me 40 years to decide on my tattoo and you're right - "Ride hard, die free" probably would not look quite so good on me today at 58!!

I assumed Eurox was an adult male, ACtT, given that he plans to have what seems to be a rather masculine tattoo. Shouldn't have too much to fear from an elderly priest, eh? Can you think of anyone else - easily findable in the general community - who would be likely to know any Latin?

dunno - is good advice to think long and hard about tattoos before getting them done. i chewed mine over for two years until i took the plunge and i now have a little purple star on the inside of my wrist and a small funky aquarius symbol on my ankle. both can be hidden easily if i feel the need and i think they look lovely. tattooing is very addictive, though and i now want more! i am thinking of having audates fortuna iuvat (fortune favours the bold) on the blade of my right hand - from fingertip to wrist - in some unusual writing. but, i will of course check my spelling and probably take another two years to think about it. particulalry as i now know how much it hurts!!!! x
