has anybody had a gastric by-pass? was it worth it? are there any side effects they dont tell you about? i'm trying to make a decision about having this surgery and would really appreciate any feedback.

My mother in law has had weight loss surgery, but she had a gastric band fitted. It's done absolute wonders for her.

However, she spent ages looking into it, as there are several types of bariatric surgery, and they don't suit everyone.

Try www.wlsinfo.org.uk to chat with others about their surgery and what life has been like afterwards. You have to sign up, but it's full of really good info.

I will say that gastric bypass surgery is irreversible, and can have some unpleasant after effects, but as with everything else, some people have no adverse effects at all. Gastric banding, however, is reversible, and adjustable. It's also less invasive.

PS. bariatric surgery is not successful for weight loss in those who have a high alcohol intake. (Not that I'm suggesting you do!)
