holes in the upper ear

Can any1 tell me what these little holes are on the upper ear. I was born with 2 of tem one on each ear. Both . my children have them also but they only have 1 on 1 ear so i know its heredatery.......but i really want to know what they are and what they mean. I asked a doctor one time and i really didn't inderstand what he was talking about he compaired it to a fish's gills he said its when the fetius dosn't complety form before birth ...not to sure if he knew what he was talking about !...DOES ANY ! KNOW !

Very common - it's called preauricular sinus.

There is lots of information on the internet about it and is absolutely nothing to worry about
