Strange...

I have just had a guy (foreign) knock on my door, showing me a hand written note which read "Please, I am deaf, can I was your car for £2, I do good job" - I refused and now i feel really bad, he had a mountain bike with him....how can we tell who is genuine out there these days...guilt complex now...

Don't feel bad, it's the oldest scam in the book.

Agree, don't feel bad, I was conned out of £5 buying postcards off a man I thought to be disabled! Saw him right as rain in a town near me a few week later! Little Bu66er!

He's more than likely not deaf and trying to make money out of people's good nature.
Don't feel guilty, sounds like a scam to me.

These people work in a network, where they pretend to be disabled, in order to make a fast, tax free buck. They are probably making thousands per week and he probably wouldn't have cleaned your car properly anyway, but playing on your guilt, you would still have given him the money anyway.

It's a scam because they are making money from others through deception, by playing on emotions, whether it's greed or pity.

dont you think it says alot about our current state of culture? i mean, the first thing we think about is that this is a scam. we have to remember we dont actually "know" for sure if this was a scam. he might have been genuine who knows? are we right to go judging instantly?

regardless of my own comments - i am a hypocrite! lol! :P i would reckon he'd be on his bike as soon as i gave him the cash - if he did start washing my car id be paranoid thinking he's gonna smash the window and steal it as soon as my backs turned!

i remember when i was a kid and my mum gave me some change to give to an "apparent" homless guy - we came walking past just before dark and saw him get into one of his mates car - a frickin sports car! i dunno what kind but i remember well it looks very similar to a red ferrari! lesson learned - case closed! atleast for me personally.

I'd love for someone to wash my car for £2, but would he have wanted to come into your house for water? and did he have any car washing equipment on his bike?

sounds iffy to me, but I am an old cynic!

And when he is finished washing the outside he suggests he could clean the inside. Get the keys and goodbye car.

Of course it's dodgy lol

having said that I would have thought the benefits he is claiming should suffice

Cue all the liberals to come on and say how good these people are for the economy and there shouldnt be any restrictions on immigration

Genuine or not, if somebody offered to wash my car for 2 quid, I'd say 'OK'.

Deafness doesnt stop people from working , i sometimes go deaf when the wife nags a lot , You should have told him there's a credit crunch on and given him a quid and told him to get on with it .....

Many yrs ago a guy called and gave me a note saying he was deaf and dumb. He cut hedges for five pounds was I interested?

I replied as a reaction, "Five quid?"

and he immediately replied "Yeah five!"

Within a second he was running down the drive like a long dog. Reminded me of the escape war film when the gestapo man says to Gordon Jackson "Good luck" and he replied "Thanks."
