Well went to see my surgeon yesterday regarding my hernia, he was very surprised at my weightloss and is happy to proceed with the surgery although he now wants to do this as a day case in the local hospital as opposed to the big city hospital! I have to go back in 3 months for a final weigh in.
With a day case he said that he would not be able to put a mesh over the hole but instead just stitch it up? Is this not risky? Also I am assuming that I will still be knocked out for this and not just numbed?

Great news Islay. x

Here's an article about the Mesh....It's been causing a few problems...

You should have asked the guy all this. Nobody here would know cos it is a personal issue.
Islay, not sure it's the same for male and female but OH had surgery for a hernia using mesh. I took him in in the morning and picked him up the same evening - he was 'knocked out' .
I recently had a double inguinal hernia mesh repair. In and out within 4 hours, no problems at all.
I gather from your description that it is an umbilical hernia.....I may be wrong. Anyway mesh would strengthen the hernia, but there are problems with mesh repair that one doesn't see with non-mesh repairs e.g infection.
You may well be a difficult case as you have had previous abdominal surgery. If you you have laparoscopic repair it will ALWAYS be done under G.A (knocked out) but if it is done without mesh and without laparoscopy, it may be done under local.

I have made many assumptions here, so could you tell me what type of hernia it is.

Thank you JJ shall I respond in the same negative manner next time you ask about your teeth or your bowels?

Its umbilical Sqad, he was concerned about using mesh because of future surgeries ie the tummy tuck that I am planning!
I'm not sure if I could go through a surgery awake!!
He was going to talk to a (can't spell it) Dr that knocks you out! Is he still needed if I only have a local?
Ah! that makes sense.
It is an umbilical hernia, you have had previous surgery, so mesh repair is out. Your surgeon will speak to the anaesthetist, but almost certainly you will have a general anaesthetic (knocked out) and this will not be done as a day case as you will almost certainly be kept in overnight.
Question Author
Hi Sqad, he is adamant that he will be doing it as a day surgery otherwise apparently there is little chance of getting it done!
I suppose I will just have to hold on until I see him in 3 months time.
Thanks for your helpSqad
LOL...yes you will.
My advice for what it is worth is to insist that it is done under GA and stay overnight. Charm him Islay ;-)
Why kept in over night?

ummmm....is that question for me?
Yeah.
Sqad, I have had a couple of procedures done under general anaesthetic in a day ward.Allowed home at end of day provided I was not going to alone that night.
^be^

That's the thing Sqad apparently there is no money for these type of ops, so I have to have this or pay for it myself.
Yeah!....you mean yes?
Islay is a big woman (or has been) she may or may not have breathing problems after the operation, she may well have breathing problems now. She may be operated on in the afternoon,I don't know and we know she has had previous abdominal surgery.
In other words after G.A she may recover like "an old person".
That's it.
OHwas in and out same day with GA - no problems.
Same as me Danny.
danny....maybe ....but each case should be assessed individually......and that is how i am treating Islay's thread.
Going for lunch now.......back later.
