Oh my I'm in agony - even been and had it xray'd!
Nurse (not even a doctor) said take painkillers and keep it moving
So I've elevated it and just now popped a crepe bandage on it
Will that be ok?
Ps - I'm thinking of adding a ice pack to the self medication

Ice would be the first thing I'd put on it. Remember RICE ? Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Oh where is Sqad ??!
If you have seen nurse and had it xray'd I think the ice pack and elevation sounds like a good idea, however you will need to keep it moving in between the resting up and ice packs. I'm not sure about the crepe bandages these days, they appear to have gone out of fashion to some degree.
All sounds fine to me. It is what I would do.

I can't believe Sqad is not around
I even voted OUT to get him back in the country ;-))
Question Author
Oh it's lovely with the bandage on
The nurse said keep it moving and painkillers- never mentioned RICE but I know Dr Google and I will keep it moving too
TBH - I'm more worried about the evidence of arthritis on the X-ray
Now that I need to fight
Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. The one most forgotten is REST - sorry to have shouted and hope you are better soon.
PS remember not to put the ice pack directly onto your skin - wrap in a towel first - the ice pack not yourself :-))

The nurse never mentioned rest
He said keep it going but I'm not fooled by that
I have my foot up as we speak
Frozen peas make a good ice-pack (don't try to eat them afterwards) as they re-freeze quickly and can fold around the injured part. Always have a hanky or some other cloth between the skin and the ice-pack (in case of burns) and don't keep it on too long, say 5 mins..

Don't keep the compression bandage on when in bed.

After a couple of days try alternating ice and heat and begin doing gentle ankle stretches........I mean gentle and stop if you get a twinge. Draw circles with the toes, bring toes towards you then push away etc..

I was a track & field athletics coach in an earlier incarnation and have also had a couple of bad sprains myself. Take care.:)
OOOh don't let me be the one to argue with professional advice but the last first aid course I went on (recent) definitely mentioned rest. Not in any way likening you to one of our horsesRic.ror but our vet has decided on occasions not to give pain killers as she says if it doesn't hurt then the silly blossoms(?) use it and do more damage - pain is telling you no tto use it.

Your all brilliant
ouch ouch.as above....ibuprofen acts as anti inflammatory ...
keep foot up as high as is comfy and shove the ice in the gin and tonic.
packet of frozen peas will do a good job
hope you feel better soon xx
I have sprained my ankle - actually broke it - do keep the compression bandage on - it gives great support - but take it off when going to bed as someone earlier said.

Take some ibrufen and monitor the situation LOL
Question Author
Okay
So it's been just over three weeks and my foot is still swelling and the big toe still aches - like where a bunion would be but its not a bunion
My foot also still aches at the front just below my toes (that's where it's swelling)
Should it take so long to get better? I've put 4lbs on cause I'm not walking as much
elevate leg..continue with Ibuprofen..perhaps a wee check in with doc ?
Three weeks!

RICE is first aid, to be done just after the injury.

I think it is time for further professional advice, from a doctor this time.
Mrs Jom sprained her ankle a week ago ..same advice although a carefully applied crepe bandage worked better than the inflatable ankle splint and the walking stick contraptions were more trouble than they were worth.
I sprained my ankle really badly once when I fell off a horse. I managed to ride back to the stables and use it to get home where my military father made me put it in a bowl of ice - from then I couldn't walk for days!! It really hurt for weeks, a lot more than 3 and wasn't pain free for months so if you've had it x-rayed I don't think it's that unusual. Of course if you're worried go back.
