I have this digital washing machine and I just use a 30 min and 44 min wash which is 40 degrees.

However, yesterday I wanted to do a wash at 60 degrees - when I read the instruction book it said that the wash would be 3 hours long. Surely this cannot be correct.

Any opinions welcome - thank you.

Depending on what make your machine is, there usually is a button you can press in to save time. Do you not have original booklet, or failing that Google the make and look online.
My usual cycles usually take in excess of two hours and I would expect a 60C wash to take longer due to the time for the water to heat up.

Modern energy efficient machines do take longer, it may seem counter intuitive but that is the case.

thanks fusion for your answer - no, this is the original book/instructions. The 60 degree wash is also a pre-wash but I don't recall my last washing machine having a 3 hour wash - I certainly wouldn't use it.
My AEG reckons 2:52 for a cottons wash at 60 deg, unless you put the max weight of washing in it is normally less than that and as Fusion says there is an option to decrease the time (and thoroughness) of the cycle. It takes a lot of time & energy to heat the water the extra 20 deg.
I agree, my 60 degree wash is almost 3 hours if the machine is full

well I guess 3 hours is the norm for 60 degrees - no there is no quick wash at 60 degrees - the quickest as I have said is 40 degrees.

thanks all for your answers. JjCon
I have a new John Lewis digital WM. My old machine had a quick wash with a fast spin but with this new machine I have to use the 20 minute quick wash then a 15 minute fast spin. But it's still quicker than a normal 3 hour cycle. Still get an excellent wash with 20 minute cycle
I often wash at 75 and the cotton cycle takes 1 hour and 20 minutes at that temperature, cold fill only
My Bosch does a 60 degree wash in an hour when I use the "reduced time" button. The clothes come out clean!
My machine does a 60 degree wash in 90mins.
Same here ummmm.
