This morning I listened to a discussion on St Patrick’s Day where the general consensus was that it’s a good excuse to get drunk – but seriously – why would anyone deliberately intend to get drunk? I did it a very long time ago and it has to rank among the very worst feelings ever!! What's the attraction?

I'm pretty sure that when folks say they're out to get drunk they actually mean that they're going to have a couple more than usual and leave it at that.
Not many want to get to the pishy pants/vomit covered fleece/burst nose from hitting the pavement.
It's an expression, that's all.
douglas............ you omitted 'fight at the chip shop' :)

Oh gawd yeah, thats the highlight of the night ;-)
Or the kick off in the kebab shop,or tussle in the taxi queue.

I think I may have done as a young un ,more in anticipation of feeling good rather than the reality that invariably happened.

Yes Mamya, it's the next morning / day !.

Drinking enough to get merry = fun.
Drinking enough to get absolutely legless = not fun.
Count me out, you cant dance when drunk
I bet you still try to though, tambo.

It was the one between "This is great!" and "No, it isn't" that taught me the lesson. Never again!
No, I don't ever intend to get drunk. But unfortunately, it has happened once or twice in the past.
Oh yes, hate that room starting to spin round when you lay down which always ends up with having a chat into the big White telephone.
Sssh tony, you promised to keep it a secret
I enjoy being drunk!

Its all fun at the time.... Next day!? Not always so fun x

tinkerbell23, Merry is good, but drunk, no. How can you enjoy feeling sick and bad?
I dont feel sick & bad when i am drunk... I feel sick & bad the morning after sometimes! Lol x
Well I've got a late start tomorrow and am getting myself outside of some Soberano from Espana.
Cheers!
For St Patrick's day, over now, this is the truth of it from an Irish person

Cheers douglas, enjoy.
Gracias, Antonio. :-)
I don't set out to get drunk but I've often gone past merry. It depends on what you're drinking and the company you're in I suppose. One drink can send someone from merry to blindo.

I've learnt the hard way not to drink wine if I go out unless it's with a meal and I'll be going to straight home!
The last time I got drunk was at a funeral a couple of years ago. Every time I looked around, another drink appeared in front of me from people I hadn't seen in ages. I fell through a table backwards that night, ouch. I didn't feel too clever, either.

Normally, I stop at 'merry', and fall asleep well before 'drunk'. Falling asleep anywhere is my unwanted party trick
