I would have wanted to give each of them a physical talking to, I just would hope that I could restrain myself, I think I would have to have forcibly removed them from the store!!

Its a very sad world where this abuse is still actually tolerated!!

I like to think I would say something, like "leave him alone, will you. He's doing OK. You could always pack your bags yourself, if you think he's too slow."
The whole thing is a set up...a publicity stunt and doesn't necessarily reflect public attitude or opinion to the issue.

How would I react? I have no idea, it would depend upon my mood that day.
I personally think people are generally too unwilling to get involved with things like this. I would have absolutely said something and dealt with the offensive person head on but then I'm argumentative by nature and this just appals me :(

Typical Sqad response. Sqad you sometimes need to grow a backbone!!
I didn't watch the whole video, but I think I would have told her that if anyone is 'retarded' it's her! I certainly wouldn't have remained silent.
Thank you Ratter.

Apologies to Sqad, you answered the question I asked!! I just didn't like the answer!

I would have to say something, people should not be treated like that, especially when they're trying to do a job, this is a year ago now,

I would do it again if needed
I would have gone off my nut at those insensitive *****.
I have a child with mild cerebral palsy.
I've witnessed the lack of understanding by some.
Sure it was a set up, but I believe it portrayed some people in their true light.
Of course it was a setup, to test the public reaction would be & of course the response was typical, the herd instinct of me,me & anyone regarded as being
Retarded should not really be seen in public. I am fortunately not like this & my immediate reaction would be to protect any person less fortunate than myself & try to defend he or she against any scene like the one shown & I am sure that the majority of people would do the same.
It really is worth watching the whole video......thanks, Ratter....x
Sorry...didn't answer your question......I would have reacted....because I have in the past....how far?.......I don't know.

the actress was brave playing the part, she could have got a slap or worst
Wouldn't even think twice I would have said something and have done. Only a few weeks ago I heard a woman in a store bad mouthing her 9 year old, calling her a stupid (female dog) -the little girl was about 9 years old and she started to cry. She made eye contact with me and said to her little girl 'look you've made that women stare now'. I'm afraid I let rip and told her she was a female dog for treating her child like that and making her cry. That stopped her in her tracks and she carried on her way saying in a loud voice 'come on darling, mummy's here don't cry now'. Unbelievable.
I would step up to the mark and say my piece and indeed have done - even though I knew it was 'staged' I found myself getting furious.

There is never a need to be rude and personal on that level to anyone.
It may have been staged but it was the reactions of the ones 'not in on it' that made me furious.
I agree with sqad, an unreal situation produces unreal responses and proves nothing.
A toughie!

I'm not entirely sure how I'd react to be honest.

It's easy to say you'd intervene from the comfort of your sofa knowing its a video set up, but faced with it in reality? I'd like to think I would say something, but like sqad, until faced with it you've no way of knowing.
As the mother of a child with a learning disability I would definitely have said something.
Sqad - "The whole thing is a set up...a publicity stunt and doesn't necessarily reflect public attitude or opinion to the issue."

It was a set-up, and I think it entirely shows the attitude of some, but by no means all - people.

My response is outlined in my response queuing at my local library to check out some books, waiting for an old lady to be served by an Asian librarian.

The woman turned to me and said, loudly - "And British people can't get jobs ..."

I replied - "This lady may very well be British, I don't know, but I do know that you are a disgusting racist and you should be utterly ashamed of yourself!"

The old woman walked off tutting, and the librarian thanked me for defending her.

I think it's appalling that anyone needs to be offended doing their job and going about their daily lives.

Free speech is a wonderful concept, but like most wonderful concepts, it has its share of abusers.

In the supermarket, I would have reacted strongly - very strongly indeed.
