hi, husband just been diagnosed with non-insulin dependent diabetes via a fasting BS which came back at 7.5 mmols
he has been told to go away and make some lifestyle changes, and is seeing the doctor again in a few weeks. He is doing well on the lifestyle changes but is completely in the dark as to whether the things he is doing are having any affect.
i don't think that GP's recommend BG monitoring any more (and they certianly don't prescribe the machines/stick)
So, he would like to get a bit more of a handle on how things are going for him - can anyone recommend a Blood glucose monitor please?

Simple to use and relatively cheap....possibly from Amazon.....popular.

Sensible move by your husband.

slightly concerned that that one seems to have lots of negative reviews for inaccuracy, but thank you

Personally I would not bother with one,let the doctor take the readings, using the same machine each time, that way you will get an accurate reading or the doctor will. I have type 2 and leave it up to the doc to do all the readings as these machines can read so different from the doctors, as long as hubby keeps up the good work he wont need a machine. The best advice I can give is to walk each day eat sensibly and at specific times of the day. I eat most repeat most of what I use to before but now very much in moderation. (Lost over a stone in 6 weeks) This so far has kept me off medication and hopefully will for a long time to come.you soon get use to the change of diet.
Have a look on the Accu-Chek web site they sometimes give them free. Mr M is diabetic and finds it very useful keeping an eye on what his sugar levels are.
