Lauren baccall who died this week was quoted as saying
I have no respect for celebrities, and I object to being called one, so don't try it! I'm an actress, not a celebrity.’

Is that the problem perhaps with celebrities today they are more interested in being celebrities than actors or actors and the influence they have on young people can be damaging if they use drugs or drink to excess maybe they need to go back to basics

I agree with her.

Someone mentioned the other day that Lewis Hamilton moaned that he had to have an escort to go toilet because fans would follow him in and ask for autographs. He's a racing driver he didn't sign up to be a celeb. It's partly the fault of the public and partly reality TV.
Being a celebrity never used to be a profession in the same way that it is now.

You used to have a job - actor, presenter, footballer, scientist, whatever, and then that would potentially lead to becoming famous.

The difference now is that there's this occupation of celebrity, that you can go straight into, skipping the middle bit of actually doing anything of any note, and people aspire to go there - it's an actual career ambition for many.

That's just how it is now. Times change.
The 'cult of celebrity' is interesting, now that it appears to have reached its peak - people being famous for nothing except being famous.

As Ms Bacall confirms, years ago, people were 'stars' because they provided a body of work that was appreciated and applauded by their respective audiences, now people are famous for simply being there.

Simple test - Tulissa is a celebrity, Mick Jagger is a star.

Align your favourites accordingly.

Welcome back Andy

Who is Tulissa, and I personally don't think Jagger is a star.
Hello AOG.

You can find out all you need to know about Tulisa here -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulisa_Contostavlos.

We must agree to differ about the status of Sir Mick.
// I personally don't think Jagger is a star. //

What you mean is you don't like him\his music. He's undeniably a rock star.
Just appreciate her work
Put you're lips together and blow
Ms Contostavlos needs to take time off from screen work but is apparently a sucker for a good script.
Side note...

With the passing of Lauren Bacall, it now means that everyone Madonna name checks in the song 'Vogue' is now gone.

I liked Lauren. Great interviewee...and back in the 50s, basically she had the best cheekbones in Hollywood.

So much so, that if memory serves me, one producer said of her:

"Man...she has great bones...if you threw a hat at her, wherever it landed, it would stay".
And yes - welcome back andy-hughes.
I loved her quote when accepting her Oscar, clutching the award to her chest, she said, "a man at last!"
sp1814 - "And yes - welcome back andy-hughes."

Thank you very much for your kind words - and to AOG also, but I haven't actually been anywhere! It was in Montreal at the beginning of July but I was on line every day from there.

It is very nice to be appreciated though - thank you gentlemen.
'I wish gordie would just shut up and sing?'
