I have had a bad flare up of what I think is hip arthritis, very painful in the groin and down leg. I can hardly lift it and I am now limping. Now I have noticed red blotches on skin at top of leg. Help ! Thanks all

Have you been diagnosed with arthritis?

I am about to have an xray, dr examined me and thinks it is first stages, ache in groin sometimes and down leg, but nothing like pain I have now.Ibuprofen not helping. I have been using a heat pillow but thats not helping ... Perhaps that's why I got the red rash ?
Hi smurf - sorry to see you're not 100%.

I don't know (cos I'm not a doctor!) if the following article has any useful info in it, but I recall finding the same one for a friend & they said it had helped.

Please accept my apologies if I've wasted your time & I wish you all the best :-)

Thanks Lie in, but I think Daffy is right, the rash could be from the heat pad. Hope this pain is just a flare up and is gone tomorrow or back to dr.
I was going to mention psoriatic arthritis as well. I never knew such a thing existed until I saw an advert for a website about it in the US. People that get that have usually had psoriasis in the past though as that and arthritis are both auto-immune disorders. Sciatica gives pains down the leg. You could try Paracetamol for the pain.

Rash going now so panic over there, think it was heat pad. Sorry folks. I will try paracetamol. Thanks again for your kind words Lie in King.
Glad it's a bit better - where are Matron (Mamya) & Sqad when you need them, eh? :-)
I think you handled the situation just fine, I was erm busy in the sluice room teaching a new young intern the ropes.

I have no doubt Sqad was similarly occupied.

Glad things are settling smurfchops.
Sounds like shingles.......see your GP.
Ah!...just seen your post which says that the rash has gone.........unlikely to be shingles.......;-)
Question Author
Sqad rash gone now. Do you think pain could be arthritis? Across top of leg, groin, down leg, hurts when I move it and hurts when I dont !
smurfy....yes.it certainly sounds like an arthritic hip.

Take Ibuprofen for the pain if it becomes prolonged.

P.S Watch for the return of the rash.
A tip I was given when I first started to have hip issues was to put a pillow between your legs when trying to sleep/rest and lying on one side.

It definitely helped me get a bit more comfortable when trying to sleep.

Hope the rash stays away. Last time I had a weird blotchy rash on my thighs it was diagnosed as pityriasis rosea.

Hi again all, I think the rash was from the heat pad and I panicked... It has gone completely. I Got some Naproxen and Codydramol from doc on Thursday, helped a lot with pain, but I am feeling very sleepy and a bit sick as per Side Effects I presume, pain not so bad now although still 'there', and I can lift my leg and walk almost normally, so I stopped taking them and will stick to Paracetamol which local pharmacist recommended. One of the leaflets on these tablets says shouldnt use if I have thyroid problems ( I am on low dose of Levothyroxin) and other leaflet said shouldnt take if I have high cholesterol (I am on simvastatins) so thought it best to stop taking the tablets. Just hoping the pain goes away completely and soon !

Nearly forgot, I had an Xray on Thursday as well, so waiting for results.
smurfy....thanks for the informed feedback......much appreciated.

Well thank you sqad and everyone for your helpful replies as always.
Instead of Heat, I find ice pack wrapped in towel helps me personally.
