Why Do I Feel So Crappy If I Oversleep?

I am generally an early riser, even on my days off I am usually up before 08.00 if I stay in any later I feel really crappy like I haven't slept at all.

I often have a 15 minute cat nap during the day. Today we took the hounds for a walk and then popped in out local for a swift pint and then had a nap when we got home. I slept really deeply for half an hour. This was around 3.00 pm and I still feel really crappy 7 hours later.

Why is this?

the second answer here sounds plausible https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071102181434AA7wd0U

its an age thing .. :). or hormones.
I've often wondered about this. I'd kill for more than 6 hours sleep...but when I get it I feel rubbish all day. As for naps sometimes I'm refreshed...others I feel off and grumpy for hours.

jno, you may be right, that second answer sounds about right!

Anne, No! its an REM thing. see up there ^^^!! anyway, I'm still a youngster!! As for hormones, I still have full control of mine thanks.

I never crave for sleep really. If I need to get up at 4,5,6 O'clock, I can, no problem and I'm fully awake immediately and bright and rearing to go.
I think it probably disrupts your body clock and everything slows down when you're asleep..unless you really need extra sleep. On the very rare occasions i sleep in the day, i usually feel worse after for a while.
Hi Ratter,Ive lost count of the number of times Ive woken up early and felt like I could have surfaced and then dropped back off again only to feel crappy when I have to get up...
I'm glad to hear you're hormones are working. still using the patches ? :)
Lucky you! I need 25 coffees to feel vaguely awake.
You are probably waking up at the wrong stage in your sleep cycle. See

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep

There's some interesting stuff there re: REM and NREM sleep, Circadian rhythms, optimal amount of sleep and naps.

I sleep about 5 hours per night and very much enjoy (but rarely get) a nap in the early afternoon. The nap must be 20 minutes long (no more nor less) or it's no good.
Sleeping more than what you body needs is as much tiring as sleeping less than that. Listen to your body and also to your soul.
I had a nap yesterday afternoon. I got up, ate something and went back to bed. I woke about 5 this morning :-)
Pixie: I need 25 coffees to feel vaguely awake.

Lol same here. :-)

I'm going with the REM thing, however I have never felt like that when waking up in bed, even if I get woken up after a short time, only when napping on the sofa.

When I wake up in the mornings, I instantly get out of bed as soon as my eyes are open and I feel great! I cant lie in bed if I am awake, I make a very bad patient when ill, if I am awake I have gotta be out of bed or I get bloody miserable.

I am literally out of the door with the hounds within 2 minutes of opening my eyes, rain or shine. When I come back I wash and make coffee etc.
I do that too. I get up as soon as I wake.

Sometimes I'm woken up and I can drop off again but if I wake on my own I get up straight away. If I go back to sleep I feel a bit sickly when I wake.
I heard that a sleep cycle is 1.5 hours so if you nap for less than that, you are interrupting the cycle hence you feel bad.
I`ve been up since 6am yesterday but I did sleep for 3 hours last night (two sleep cycles) so I don`t feel too bad. I`m off to bed in a minute but the same time - 3 hours only - and then hopefully that`ll keep me going until tonight.
