Hello again everyone who answered me.
The latest news is that I got a wheelchair from the Red Cross (very straightforward) , booked a wheelchair taxi ) to take my ancient aunt (92) to the surgery.(not quite as straightforward as the appointment co-incided with school coming out time and lots of the wheelchair taxis were booked up bringing wheelchair-bound kids home). She DIDN'T refuse to go on the day (nightmare scenario). The GP gave her a steroid injection into the joint of her knee and it has WORKED!
She is in a lot less pain and can get about a bit better.
Hurrahs all round !
