sore throat

I have had a sore throst now for 6 days. It is very sore when I swallow also my ears are very painful. One minute im hot the next I am so cold i have goose pimples. My neck is painful and I have a bad cough. I am on anti-biotics which are not doing anything. Any ideas please.

By the way, I accept your views on NHS Direct I would never use it.

thanks for the good advise. I been on anti-biotics since last friday. Cant sleep and they no good. Im 46 and generally in good health thats untill i stopped smoking 4 month ago.
I ask on here because it gives good advise, but there are cranks everywhere. Time wasters can Jog On .

i agree with you totally hopkirk, i have no doubt some abers have experience in medicine. but, when i go to a hospital i know i am being treated by genuine people. anyone can say they are brain surgeons on ab. dont forget google is a very handy tool anyone can use.

I rate the advice I get on here-especially from Sqad who I find reassuring in his 'bluntness' (no offence meant btw).Also think it helps to share your symptoms as other ABers can also reassure with their own experiences and advice.
I personally think most people know themselves well enough to go to their GP and bypass AB if they were very concerned.
Have to say 2 experiences of NHS24 -first was with my son -who unknown to me as I was in Spain-felt awful and gave his symptoms.He was told to unlock his door and within 5mins an ambulance was there and he was admitted to hospital -he had a virus which had ended up attacking his heart.He was in hospital for a week.
I phoned when my cellulitis took a strange turn with a rash (I had previously had excellent advice on here) - I was adviced to go to phone my GP immediately giving a 'code word' for an emergency and I was there within 15 mins and that early intervention absolutely saved me a lengthy hospital stay.Just balancing it up.

NHSDirect....you do know...they are NOT qualified.

I am qualified and I know from the answers given by the one´s that I have named are truly, well qualified and give excellent advice.....far superior to the non qualified personel of NHS direct.

I have to agree about how awful nhs direct are, I would rather run my medical problems past people on here than phone them up.

hiya sounds viral anti-biotics won't touch it did your GP give you a diagnosis because the anti-biotics he gave you might not be effective for the diagnosis if it is in fact a bacterial infection. can i ask which ones he gave you and what dose? sqad can i ask are you a professional working in the NHS or any sort of healthcare profession where you deal with peoples diagnosis?

I've just read your post & I hope you are feeling better. I went through a phase of this a few years ago, turned it out it was tonsillitis - which I seem to get about 7 times over the course of a year and half - and then it just stopped. I totally had all the same symptoms you have. In each case it was anti-biotics, painkillers & rest. Good luck

thanks Meg. Cant remember the name of the anti-biotic but although when I went back to the doctor again, the doctor said the tablets wouldnt work as its viral, but to continue with them!!! Whats the point I thought. The co-codamol have taken the pain away but when they wear off its back again. Now my joints are painful and have developed a chesty cough. Feel dreadfull daily. What can I do as Im still off work and I panic! Any ideas of how i can feel better :-l
